I started out wanting to make a creepy glitch video. But it developed into more than that.
While I was making Esoterra, I got the urge to do something edgy, and I have always wanted to do text and glitch effects in a video. I've had a love affair with JT Bruce's "Hypnic Jerk" for several years so worked on cutting it down to something usable (the track is ~10 minutes long).

I set it aside to make after Esoterra was done. I didn't intend to finish Dysphoria for Anime Weekend Atlanta (AWA) PRO, but I finished it in time and submitted them both. The unfortunately ended up competing with each other as finalists in the same categories of Technical and Artistic. Dysphoria won technical, but Esoterra later won Most Artistic in A-M-V.Org 2021 Viewers Choice Awards.
Esoterra did not do well on AMVNews. We'll see if Dysphoria does any better.
This AMV was a lot more personal, so I did not feel comfortable putting it here until now.
JT Bruce found this AMV on youtube and left a comment about my song cut & the video in 2021:
"Fantastic job! I’m the guy who made the original music/spoken word track over 15 years ago now which feels like ancient history. I love how you’ve adapted and edited the piece to reflect your personal experience. When I wrote the song, I was a college freshman dealing with my own identity issues and finding a balance between living in a fantasy world as an artist and in reality as a student and human being. I’m so glad you could find your own meaning in it. Again, excellent work on this edit, both the visuals and audio – a well deserved win at your event!"

Мне особенно понравился отрезок с 1:06 по 1:09
StandardQuip is a good friend of mine, but in the spirit of the site I'll give some honest thoughts. I don't like it.
- I like the text. The voice is so low that it's difficult to pick out sometimes and it helps me understand it. I also think it meshes well with the video. To me this is text done right.
- I like the glitch effects. They're very well done. This won Best Technical at AWA in 2020 and that's well deserved.
- I dislike the scene selection. If you read the very long explanation linked in the description, there are reasons for it. But critically I don't think the scenes land with an audience. The art style is too varied and often clashes with the tone of the song. I'd specifically point to the Tarzan-esque scene from Paprika. It's a funny scene and felt out of place in a serious horror amv.
- My biggest negative is the concept of the video itself. It is relentlessly nihilistic with no catharsis in sight - an unblinking descent into mental illness. The classic English saying is that art should disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed. It definitely achieves the first part but will anyone on this earth find it comforting? My biggest reaction upon watching it is, like KeksPistols, a desire to not watch it again.
All of that being said, having read about it and realizing how intensely personal this project was, I have a respect for it. Sometimes art is not about being entertaining but about exorcising one's inner demons. StandardQuip is in a better place than he was all those years ago when he made this, and this video was a necessary stepping stone. I don't like it, and that's fine. Giving a score for this one is is ridiculous but I gave it a 2/5.
